ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study aimed to investigate types of English communication strategies used by Thai exchange students. The population and samples of this study were 9 Thai students of Buriram Rajabhat University who were participated in cultural exchange program in China from 28 May to 8 June 2018. They were 5 females and 4 males. The researchers used purposive sampling technique to group the population and samples. The research instruments were self-report questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The collected data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The qualitative data was analyzed by a content analysis. The results were indicated that;
1) The most used of English communication strategies was the risk-taking strategies.
2) The highest sub-strategy used was social-affective strategy.
The findings of this research will be beneficial for students who are interested in being exchange student and improving English communication skills. It can provide guidance for students in choosing appropriate types of communication strategies in various situations inside and outside the classroom, especially when they face some difficulties in communication.
